For many decades, a class of drugs known as SSRIs (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors) had been banned for pilots to take; they were ground for an immediate disqualification on a medical. (SSRIs are a class of antidepressants; they're widely regarded as the safest and one of the most effective classes of drugs that we have.)

This has posed a moral dilemma for me; I've had to lie to the FAA repeatedly when I went to get my medical examination. I never much liked doing that, and if word got out somehow, my medical would be revoked. (I have no idea how; indeed, the FAA reports no record of that ever happening to any pilot.) But, it wasn't fun; I'd always twinge when checking the "no" box there.

This is why it's so joyous for me to report today that the FAA has finally pulled their heads out of their asses. It is absolutely wonderful that the FAA has finally moved into this century; on top of that, it's wonderful that they've added a 6 month amnesty clause. The AOPA has been pushing for this for four years now, and I thought it would never come to pass; but so it has.

Absolutely brilliant.
